Texas Doctor Faces Jail Time for Prescribing Hydrocodone

A physician from the city of Odessa in west Texas will be sentenced to at least 10 years behind bars for writing counterfeit prescriptions for hydrocodone.

Dr. Barrett Doyle Whitefield pleaded guilty on Thursday to possession of controlled substances charges.

Police say that Whitefield prescribed hydrocodone pills to many who requested them–he sometimes did not even treat or examine them.

According to prosecutors, Whitefield knew that a few of his co-defendants were selling the pills to locals. Four other individuals have pleaded guilty to the acts, while three more await trial.
