An El Paso man was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for smuggling tons of drugs using vehicles from unsuspecting drivers.
According to prosecutors, 38-year-old Jesus Chavez smuggled over 6,000 pounds of marijuana from Cuidad Juarez Mexico into El Paso, TX.
Investigators say that the drug smugglers would identity cars who frequently used a dedicated commuter lane that went from Mexico into Texas. They would then slip bags of marijuana into the trunks of the vehicles without the owner’s knowledge. These bags would then be retrieved once they crossed the border.
Chavez pleaded guilty in may to conspiracy to import marijuana.
