A young woman in Miami was sentenced to jail this week for disrespecting a court judge.
Penelope Soto, 18, was in court on Monday morning because she is accused of unlawfully possessing Xanax. Soto laughed repeatedly in the courtroom, and she answered, “actually, no” when the judge asked if she was under the influence of drugs.
When the judge set her bond at $5,000, Soto said, “adios” and started to walk away. She was then ordered to stand in front of the judge again. He had decided to raise her bond to $10,000.
The defendant reacted to this news with the obscene hand gesture. She was subsequently held in contempt of court, and authorities booked her in the county jail for 30 days.
